Rolling Grants for Kenyan NGOs: 2 Open Year-Round in 2026

Pen resting on a blank notebook, ready for a rolling grants application by a Kenyan NGO

By the NGOs.ke Editorial Team.

Most grant calls for Kenyan NGOs come with a deadline and a long wait. A small number do not. As of October 2026, two funders still accept applications at any time of year: Urgent Action Fund Africa (UAF-Africa), which funds urgent women’s rights work with decisions in days, and the Rufford Foundation, which funds small nature conservation projects with no closing date. Both are narrow, and neither suits every organisation, but if you fit, you can apply today rather than waiting for the next cycle.

Which grants for Kenyan NGOs have no deadline in 2026?

Here is how the two compare at a glance, based on each funder’s own published guidance.

Funder Who it is for Grant size Deadline
UAF-Africa Rapid Response Grant Women-led groups across Africa facing a time-urgent situation US$12,000 None (rolling)
UAF-Africa Defending the Defenders Grant Women-led groups protecting women human rights defenders US$5,000 None (rolling)
UAF-Africa Advocacy and Alliance Building Grant Women-led groups building alliances US$20,000 None (rolling)
Rufford Small Grants Early-career conservationists in eligible countries Up to £7,000 first grant; up to £18,000 at completion stage None

Check the funder’s country list and current forms before you start, since terms can change.

How does the UAF-Africa rapid response grant work?

UAF-Africa is built for moments when a normal grant cycle is too slow: a sudden crackdown, a threat to a defender, a window to influence a decision. According to its FAQs, the fund has no funding cycle. Applications are acknowledged within 24 hours, and review takes place within 72 hours, although verification of endorsements can slow that down.

The rules are specific:

  • The group must be women-led, with at least 70% of members identifying as women and women in decision-making roles.
  • Registration is not required if you have a registered fiscal sponsor, and collectives need a Memorandum of Understanding.
  • Organisations based outside Africa are not eligible. The fund wants locally led work.
  • The action must happen in less than three months and be unanticipated, strategic and time-urgent.
  • Applications go to proposals@UAF-Africa.org and are reviewed in English, Swahili, French, Portuguese and Arabic.

The fund does not pay for humanitarian aid, conference travel, scholarships and training, income-generating activities, overhead, health care services, or anything you could have planned within normal programming. Repeat applications are allowed, but you cannot have two under review at once. Its office is in Nairobi and it serves the whole continent, though the FAQs do not name Kenya specifically, so confirm with the grants team if you are unsure.

Can a Kenyan conservation group apply to Rufford?

Possibly, if your country is on Rufford’s eligibility list, which sits on a separate page of its application site. The programme targets nature conservation, with priority for people doing or recently finishing an MSc or PhD (or equivalent), and it does not fund BSc students. Eligible work includes species projects, threatened habitats, human-wildlife conflict and community education. For species work, the species must be assessed as other than Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, or unassessed but thought to be globally threatened.

Grants are staged: up to £7,000 for a first grant, up to £8,000 for a second, up to £12,000 as a Booster Grant and up to £18,000 for the final Completion Grant. There are no deadlines, but you may submit only one application in any 12-month period, and a rejection means a 12-month wait. Rufford funds only fieldwork costs and generally expects to cover 50-100% of a small or pilot project.

What should you prepare before applying to a rolling fund?

Rolling does not mean easy. Reviewers see applications at all times, so a weak one costs you more than it would in a big cycle, especially at Rufford where a rejection locks you out for a year. Before you apply:

  • Match yourself against the exclusions first. Most rejections come from asking for something the fund says it will not pay for.
  • Write a one-page rationale that states why the timing matters (UAF-Africa) or what conservation outcome the work delivers (Rufford).
  • Line up your fiscal sponsor, MoU or co-funding evidence in advance.
  • Keep reporting current on any earlier grant, since both funders tie repeat awards to it.

If your organisation does not fit either fund, the fixed-deadline calls are the next stop. Our guide to where to find real NGO funding in Kenya covers the wider landscape, and our walkthrough on writing a grant proposal for a Kenyan NGO helps with the application itself. The Commonwealth Foundation grants close on 26 October 2026, so that one is time-bound.

Frequently asked questions

Are there grants for Kenyan NGOs that accept applications all year?

Yes, a few. UAF-Africa takes rolling applications for women-led groups, and the Rufford Foundation has no deadlines for conservation projects. Both have strict eligibility rules.

How fast does UAF-Africa respond?

It says applications are acknowledged within 24 hours and reviewed within 72 hours, subject to how quickly endorsements and information can be verified.

Does my NGO need to be registered to get a UAF-Africa grant?

No. Unregistered groups can apply through a registered fiscal sponsor, and collectives need an MoU. The group must still be women-led.

Can I apply to Rufford more than once?

You can submit one application in any 12-month period. If you are rejected, you must wait 12 months, and if you are funded you must wait at least 12 months before seeking the next stage.

Where can I read the official rules?

Use the funders’ own pages: the UAF-Africa FAQs and the Rufford grant criteria.

Information checked October 2026. Grant terms change, so confirm details with the funder before applying.
