How can a Kenyan NGO work with the United Nations? Start by registering on the UN Partner Portal, which UNICEF, UNHCR and WFP use to find and vet civil society partners, then build relationships with the UN offices clustered at Gigiri in Nairobi. UN Day is on 24 October, and with more than 6,000 UN personnel based in Kenya, it is a practical moment to review how your organisation is positioned. This guide covers the routes that exist, what registration does and does not guarantee, and the political risks worth knowing about.
What is UN Day and why does it matter to Kenyan NGOs?
According to the United Nations, 24 October marks the anniversary of the UN Charter entering into force in 1945, when the Organization formally began after enough signatories, including the five permanent Security Council members, had ratified it. It is observed each year to reaffirm the Charter’s principles.
For Kenyan civil society the date has a local edge. Nairobi is one of very few cities in the world that hosts UN headquarters-level offices, and UNEP and UN-Habitat are the only UN agencies headquartered in the global South. As of October 2026 that proximity is a real asset for any NGO that knows how to use it.
How big is the UN presence in Nairobi?
PassBlue reported in December 2025 that more than 6,000 UN personnel are based in Kenya, about 5,000 of them inside the UN Office at Nairobi (UNON) compound. The Gigiri site covers 140 acres and hosts 40 entities and more than 70 offices. A construction programme of nearly US$340 million was approved in 2023, including a US$265.7 million upgrade of conference facilities planned for 2026 to 2030.

UNICEF, UNFPA and UN Women were reported in 2025 to be relocating global functions to Nairobi as part of the UN80 reform. Eye Radio’s July 2025 report said staff numbers were still under discussion and local staff had not been told which departments would move. We could not find a confirmed 2026 update on the final scale, so check directly with each agency. Our earlier piece on what the UN’s Nairobi move means for NGO jobs covers the employment side.
How do NGOs partner with UN agencies?
The main formal route is the UN Partner Portal (UNPP). Per UNICEF’s description, it is an online platform run as a joint initiative of UNICEF, UNHCR and WFP that aims to harmonise how UN agencies work with civil society. Organisations create a profile, agencies post partnership opportunities and receive applications, and due diligence checks are shared.
Who can register? NGOs, community-based organisations and academic institutions that are committed to humanitarian goals, UN core values, the Principles of Partnership, and good governance, including transparency, accountability and sound financial management.
One caution matters more than any other: registration does not guarantee a partnership. It makes you visible and eligible to apply or to be notified of direct selection opportunities, but each agency still assesses and selects. Treat it as the entry ticket, not the contract.
What should an NGO have ready before approaching the UN?
- Clean registration papers. Your PBO or other registration should be current. See our guide to filing PBO annual returns and the PBO Act transition checklist.
- Governance and financial controls. Audited accounts, a functioning board and written financial policies, since due diligence screens for them.
- A safeguarding policy. UN partners expect one. Our safeguarding policy guide is a starting point.
- A clear niche and track record. Agencies fund specific results in specific places, so a one-page capability statement beats a long generic brochure.
- Data protection compliance. Handling beneficiary data without ODPC registration is a red flag.
Why diversify beyond the UN?
The UN itself is under financial pressure and restructuring under UN80, and funding squeezes ripple down to implementing partners. Our analysis of Kenyan NGOs after USAID makes the same point from the donor side: relying on one funder is the riskiest strategy. Pair UN partnership with other routes such as PADOR registration for EU grants, and consider whether ECOSOC consultative status fits your advocacy goals.
What are the civic-space risks?
Proximity to the UN does not mean protection. PassBlue reported that UN special rapporteurs issued a joint communiqué in summer 2025 alleging a pattern of criminalisation and harassment of rights defenders in Kenya. Special Rapporteur Mary Lawlor, the lead author of the August complaint, said state organs were “intentionally mobilized” against defenders. Kenya responded in October 2025, defending arrests as lawful enforcement and disputing claims of systematic targeting. The UN says Kenya has accepted a full UN human rights office covering the country, based at the UNON hub.
The practical takeaway for advocacy NGOs: document your work carefully, keep compliance airtight, and know how to reach the UN human rights office in Nairobi if you face harassment. Our civic space guide has more.
Frequently asked questions
Is UN Day a public holiday in Kenya?
No. UN Day, 24 October, is an international observance, not a Kenyan public holiday.
Does registering on the UN Partner Portal cost money?
We found no registration fee mentioned in the sources we reviewed, but check the portal itself for current terms before you start.
Which UN agencies use the UN Partner Portal?
UNICEF, UNHCR and WFP are named as the joint initiative behind it, and other agencies may post opportunities. Check the portal for the current list.
Will the UN’s relocation to Nairobi create more funding for local NGOs?
It may create more proximity and procurement, but the final scale of the move is unconfirmed, and UN budgets are shrinking overall. Plan for opportunity, not certainty.
Can small community organisations register?
Yes. The UNPP is open to community-based organisations as well as NGOs and academic institutions, but they must still meet governance and due diligence expectations.
