Nairobi holds the largest concentration of NGOs anywhere in Kenya. The city is home to the UN’s Gigiri complex, dozens of regional secretariats, and the national government ministries most NGOs need to work alongside, so it makes sense that organisations cluster here even when their programmes run elsewhere in the country.
That concentration is also what makes finding the right one difficult. A search for “NGOs in Nairobi” turns up thousands of organisations working across very different sectors, from human rights and advocacy to water, sanitation and hygiene, youth empowerment, health and wellbeing, and poverty alleviation. Knowing what to look for narrows that down quickly.
Start with sector, not size
Large, well known NGOs aren’t always the right fit, particularly if you’re looking for a partner, a job, or a grassroots organisation working directly in a specific Nairobi neighbourhood. Filtering by sector first, then by area, usually gets you to a shorter, more relevant list than starting from a general search.
Check the basics before you reach out
Before contacting any organisation, it’s worth confirming a few things: whether it’s registered with Kenya’s NGO Coordination Board, whether it publishes any recent activity or annual reporting, and whether its stated location and contact details are current. Organisations that are active and legitimate are usually straightforward about all three.
Where Nairobi’s NGOs tend to be based
Westlands and Kilimani host a large share of Nairobi’s international and regional NGOs, close to the UN complex in Gigiri, while many community based and grassroots organisations are based directly in the areas they serve, including Kibera, Mathare, and Kawangware. If proximity to a specific community matters for your work, it’s worth filtering by that area directly rather than assuming a Nairobi listing means citywide reach.
