GivingTuesday 2026 Kenya: NGO Fundraising Plan (1 Dec)

Roadside mobile money agent shopfront in East Africa, the kind of channel used for GivingTuesday donations

By the NGOs.ke Editorial Team.

When is GivingTuesday 2026, and can a Kenyan NGO take part? GivingTuesday falls on Tuesday, 1 December 2026. No registration is needed to join, so any Kenyan NGO, CBO or PBO can run a campaign. With about seven weeks to go as of mid-October 2026, the organisations that do best are usually the ones that start building their donor lists, M-Pesa payment channels and ambassador networks now, not in the last week of November.

Does GivingTuesday work for Kenyan NGOs?

It can, with caveats. Most published playbooks are written for US and European charities, where card payments and email lists dominate. Kenyan supporters mostly give by mobile money, often in small amounts, and often through someone they know personally. That makes the peer-to-peer model the best fit: individual supporters ask their own circles to give.

GivingTuesday’s own peer-to-peer toolkit lists M-Changa, the Nairobi-based platform, as an example of a mobile-friendly payment option. That is a small signal that the movement expects African giving channels, but it does not give you Kenyan conversion rates. We could not find a published Kenyan benchmark for GivingTuesday results, so set your target from your own past appeals, not from US averages.

How should an NGO prepare, week by week?

Bloomerang’s suggested sequence moves from theme and donor segments in September, through copy and donation-page tuning in October, to outreach in November and a push on the day. Adapted for a Kenyan NGO starting now:

  1. This week: pick one specific ask. “Fund 40 school-term water filters for Kitui households” beats “support our work.” Decide a realistic Kenya shilling target based on your last appeal.
  2. By end of October: set up and test your payment route (see below) and write the donor message in English and Kiswahili.
  3. Early November: recruit 10 to 20 ambassadors: board members, volunteers, past partners, staff families. Give each a short personal story template.
  4. Mid to late November: run a kickoff call, share QR codes and a Paybill or Till message people can forward on WhatsApp, and send first updates.
  5. 1 December: post progress through the day, thank donors by name where they agree, and report the running total.
  6. After: send a thank-you within 48 hours and a results note within a month. Retention is where the real value sits.

What is the easiest way to accept M-Pesa gifts?

You have three realistic options. Your own Paybill or Till number gives you control but needs set-up time and clear reconciliation. Our M-Pesa donations setup guide walks through that route, and our overview of digital fundraising tools compares platforms.

Alternatively, organisations fundraising on GlobalGiving can receive Kenya shilling gifts through its M-Changa partnership. According to GlobalGiving, donors choose Pay Bill, enter the M-Changa business number and the project account number (the letters GG plus the project ID). That page dates from the 2018 launch, so check the current number on GlobalGiving before you publish it to supporters.

Whichever route you choose, send a test payment first and confirm the SMS receipt and your reconciliation report work. Bloomerang’s guidance makes the same point about testing the whole donor journey before launch.

What should you ask corporate and major donors to do?

December is also when companies finalise year-end giving. A matching offer (“every shilling given on 1 December is doubled up to Sh200,000”) gives individuals a reason to act on the day. Make sure any corporate partner understands the tax position, which we cover in our guide to corporate donations to NGOs in Kenya. Confirm your PBO status and records are in order first, since donors increasingly check.

Frequently asked questions

What date is GivingTuesday in 2026?

Tuesday, 1 December 2026, the Tuesday after the US Thanksgiving weekend.

Do we need to register our NGO with GivingTuesday?

No. Participation is free and open. You just need a clear ask and a way to receive gifts.

Is peer-to-peer fundraising better than a single appeal?

For most small NGOs, yes. GivingTuesday’s own toolkit recommends recruiting ambassadors, who each set up a personal page, a photo, a small self-donation and their story, then share it with friends and family.

Which Kenyan platforms accept M-Pesa gifts?

Your own Paybill or Till, M-Changa, and GlobalGiving through its M-Changa partnership. Check fees on each platform, as we could not confirm them from the pages we reviewed.

Where can I find official peer-to-peer guidance?

GivingTuesday publishes a free peer-to-peer fundraising toolkit with ambassador and communications templates.

Figures and dates were checked in October 2026 and can change. Verify payment details with each platform before sharing them publicly.
